What is it with the World today? We seem to have lost our way! The basic principles that we were taught Have all gone far astray! The principles of decency, of honour, and respect, Of taking pride in what we do and Accomplish in ways correct; Each one’s human dignity to cherish and uphold, To have a social conscience, And no one’s rights withhold; To understand and recognize we all have equal rights, Endowed upon each one of us, By the One Who gave us Life! We were not put on Earth to trample On another human being, To view others as dispensable tools For our self indulgent gains; We have no right to keep one down So we can build self up, To deny another his dignity, As we selfishly climb to top! But top of what, we need to ask, What is the worth and gain? To have more power and material goods, Than everyone else it’s plain!! But to what end is this greed and lust, This insatiable appetite, That leads to ruthlessness and strife, As Darkness overwhelms the Light. Meanwhile so many people who Are honest and sincere, Hard working and of decent ilk, Fall victim to th’ unfairness Of those who feel no guilt! Hard workers are the engine of the World, While predators come and with a swoop, Seize all that they can hold! This is not our purpose Here, To be overcome with greed, To spend our lives in acquiring Far more than we can need, More so if this is done by Keeping others down, By circumventing rules and rights, While corrupt behaviours abound. When all of it is said and done, And the Maker calls us home, What will be the good of having sold one’s soul, And squandered one’s time and goal. The goal of common decency, of honour and respect, Each one’s human dignity to cherish and uphold, To have a social conscience, And no one’s right withhold. To understand and recognize we all have equal rights, Endowed upon each one of us By the One Who gave us Life!
